I think it would be extremely beneficial for the UNE community to be more aware of the Writing Fellows’ Program. The program allows for students who are writing fellows to be more involved in a professors classroom; they obtain experience in the creation of different lesson plans, build relationships with faculty and with students, and expand on their own writing abilities.
As a writing fellow, I have expanded my relationships among students and faculty. Not only has it led to a sense of belonging and responsibility at this university, but being a writing fellow has actually helped me to create relationships that guide me through complications in my own life. The professor that I am working with has gone through a lot of the same experiences that I am hoping to go through in the future. She went to medical school, and I am hoping to go to dental school. She has given me a ton of advice and has been extremely helpful in eliminating some of my anxieties about the process of my education. In creating these connections with faculty, I feel much more welcome in the classroom. The students recognize that their professor appreciates the time I spend within her class and they reflect that same respect for me. I have built some strong relationships with the students where they come to me for advice about more than just their writing process. Some students reach out to me when they are confused about an assignment given by professor Amoroso because they, for whatever reason, do not want to ask her specifically. This helps the structure of the overall classroom because I can report back to the professor specific things that the students are struggling with that they may not have brought up on their own.
I feel that it would be extremely beneficial for UNE to expand this program in order for more students and faculty to experience this idea of communication among course level issues, as well as this creation of a sense of community within the school.
