One of the most discouraging things about knitting is how difficult it can be to learn alone. I learned how to knit in a group of people who were at varying levels of proficiency. This helped me to feel more encouraged about learning, as I wasn’t the only beginner, and I learned more efficiently because I had the help of peers. Since learning how to knit, I have tried to teach myself how to crochet at least four separate times. I’ve found myself to be unsuccessful over and over again, because I’m doing it alone. Nobody is there to give me guidance, hold me accountable and inspire me to carry on.
Because knitting isn’t as popular a hobby as sports, music, theater, etc.. it can be difficult to find ways to meet people within the community who also are interested in learning, teaching or engaging in the hobby. After a little digging, I was able to find some groups and upcoming events in the area.
This studio is found in Scarborough Maine in the Oak Hill Plaza. They mostly sell yarn, but the owner, Donna, has been known to give knitting lessons to those interested. She offers lessons to beginners, experts and those who need help with a certain project. I haven’t been here, but I definitely might try it out soon!! I do need to buy yarn..
This studio is found in Portland Maine. They are a yarn shop that has been open since 2004 and have found themselves creating their own podcast! This could be incredibly helpful if you don’t have the time to dedicate for a lesson or event. You can learn tons from podcasts and this is very unique to the knitting world. There aren’t many knitting podcasts out there. You can access their podcast through their website, which I’ve linked above. They used to host a plethora of events before COVID, and have just recently brought them back!
Knit and Sip at Granite Coast Brewing, Peabody MA
This upcoming event takes place on Friday, April 22nd in Peabody MA. Yes, I know this is a little far.. but I decided to include it anyways because it sounds like a blast. This event kicks off at 6pm at the Granite Coast Brewing Company. You bring your own knitting supplies, and they’ll supply you with beer! This seems like an incredibly fun way to enjoy your night out while also meeting some fellow knitters.
This event also takes place on Friday, April 22nd and is entirely free. This event kicks off at 9am at the Brewer Public Library. It is open to any knitter or crocheter, no matter their skill level. You’re advised to bring your own supplies/projects and enjoy the company of other local knitters. If this event weren’t taking place so early, I might’ve attended!!
