HOW TO PICK A GOOD YARN

STEP 1: PICK YOUR PROJECT

Depending on what you’re choosing to create, your yarn will change. If you’re choosing to knit a blanket, you may want to go for a bigger yarn. A bigger yarn will allow for less stitches and it will lower the amount of time you will need to spend on completing your project. You’ll find that your blanket will be looser and you will have visible holes between stitches. If this isn’t the look you’re going for, you may want a smaller yarn for a tighter stitch. This same thought process should be used for any knitting project to ensure you’re creating the product you want and will be happy with.

STEP 2: EVALUATE YOUR SKILLS

Depending on how comfortable you are with knitting, it is often suggested to start with a lighter yarn color in order to see your stitches better. Lighter yarns allow you to keep track of your stitch count. This allows you to notice when you drop or pick up a stitch by mistake. By choosing a lighter color yarn until you’re more comfortable with knitting, you will limit your mistakes and your frustration during the learning process. Likewise, the material of the yarn is important for beginners. Wool tends to be recommended because it is more stretchy than other yarn types and can handle more distress.

STEP 3: IT’S OK TO GO FOR LOOKS

This step is pretty self explanatory.. but, you obviously want to choose yarn that appeals to you. Remember, you are spending time and money to get creative and do something you enjoy. Have fun with the colors and the textures!
