  • Main character: Shuggie Bain
  • 16 y/o & works at a supermarket – might be 15? Kind of confused about his actual age. Agnes seems to attach to him when she feels lonely. Almost as if she depends on him to need her, just so she can feel needed and have a purpose.
  • Shuggie’s mom lives with her husband, three kids and her mother (Lizzie)
  • Catherine is Shuggie’s older sister and Leek is his older brother – Shuggie is the youngest
  • Shug is Agnes’ second husband and potentially Shuggie’s dad. He does not seem like a good man – consistently cheating on Agnes and and sexually abusing her. Many are drawn to him through, it seems, because he is confident and charismatic.
  • Cathrine, the older sister, seems to look after Leek the most. Leek disappears often.
  • Leek and Catherine have the same dad, first husband, whereas Shuggie is the only one who belongs to Shug
  • Shug is cheating on Agnes with Mary Anne and Agnes knows
  • Between the sexual assaults and the strange family dynamics, this book already seems more intriguing than This Mournable Body was and it definitely provokes a lot of different emotions from it’s readers. I can already sense why this book would have been picked over This Mournable Body. The depth of the characters and storyline is already much better than This Mournable Body
