  • Her definition of literature, “a record of experience”
  • I both like and dislike this definition – it’s kind of cool to think of how abstractly she defines literature but that same level of abstract is what I don’t like about it. Kind of hard to explain
  • Zimbabwe’s political independence didn’t take place until 1980
  • “Thus, from very early on, black literary production in Rhodesia was established as a public, non-profit exercise, while white literary production was established as a private, commercial undertaking” VERY INTERESTING QUOTE!
  • Another example of white literacy being taken more seriously than black literacy
  • The Literature Bureau wouldn’t publish anything that seemed as though it had a distaste for colonialism
  • The Zimbabwe Literature Bureau was then created in attempt to undermine the Literature Bureau and reverse censorship
  • “There had not been a single war novel written by a black Zimbabwean up until the time of independence”
